Comm Science & Disorders Undergraduate Programs
We offer one undergraduate major and one undergraduate minor in Communication Science & Disorders, and current undergraduates are eligible to pursue an interdepartmental Certificate in Developmental Disabilities.
Undergraduate Major
The bachelor’s degree in Communication Science and Disorders provides a liberal arts background in the nature of human communication and its disorders. The curriculum also provides pre-professional preparation to students interested in pursuing graduate education in the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology.
Note: A master’s degree is the minimum educational level for entrance into the profession, and graduate-level training is required for professional specialization and fulfillment of requirements for national certification, state licensure, and state teacher certification. Completion of the undergraduate program through the department does not guarantee admission into the department’s graduate program, but it is the first step for students who wish to pursue a career.

Undergraduate Advising
Students accepted into the major with 60 or more hours will be assigned a departmental faculty advisor. The advisor will address questions regarding the major, course registration, courses to take for teacher certification, certificate program options and other matters.
One semester before graduation, students normally meet with the School's academic coordinator to do a check of major requirements. Information will be sent to students on completing a graduation check. Students also are required to do a graduation check with the Office of the Registrar once they reach 90 hours. Please see the Office of the Registrar's Graduation Section for more details.
Undergraduate Minor
Requirements for an undergraduate minor in communication disorders are fourteen (14) semester hours in departmental courses, with a grade of “C” or better in each course. At least six (6) of the fourteen (14) semester hours must be completed at The Florida State University.
No more than eight (8) hours of sign language may count towards the minor. Sign language courses used to satisfy the foreign language requirement cannot count towards the minor. Completion of a minor in Communication Science & Disorders does not complete all the prerequisites needed for admission into our graduate program, nor does it provide the necessary background for licensure.
School of Communication Science & Disorders approval must be obtained to register for certain courses in the minor.
